Senior Development Engineer

[Reports To]
Development and Production Team Leader

[Job Purpose]
Job is R&D position. Perform development project under the supervision of team leader. Perform technical service function both providing support for production staffs and marketing/sales staffs. Meet customers periodically.

[Essential Functions]
Identify the essential functions or accountabilities of the job in order of importance. Show what percentage of the job accounts for each major activity.
1. Develop new products based on market requirement. 50%
2. Periodically meet and provide technical service to customers. 15%
3. Modify current product based on market requirement. 15%
4. Improve manufacturing process for existing products. 10%
5. Acquire intellectual property from developing new products and improving current product and process. 10%

[Minimum Required Education & Experience]
-Master¡¯s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science or other related background.
-In-depth knowledge and understanding of polymers.
-Strong interpersonal skills.
-Fluent written and spoken English

[Preferred Education & Experience]
-Ph. D degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science or other related background.
-Experience in polyurethane related work.
-Experience in polymer coating process.
-7 years experience in Chemical, polyurethane or related industry. (including graduate school)

2. Describe the most difficult or complex aspects of the position.
1) Often, researcher needs to make decision based on unclear information. This is because he/she does not have enough time to gather necessary information due to time constraint imposed by customer. In those cases researcher needs to be able to quickly gather relevant information and make a most rational decision based on given data.
2) Since R&D position is tightly connected to marketing and production section, researcher tends to spend most of his/her time dealing with current situation, and finds it hard to pursue innovative long-term goals. He/she needs to be able to set long term research goal and pursue it.

3.Discuss the 3 –5 major objectives that the person is expected to accomplish to be successful in the first year.
1) Understand polyurethane chemistry and learn lab scale polyurethane foaming scale
2) Understand eSORBA manufacturing technology, characteristic, application,
and known issues of eSORBA products.
3) Build good relationship with other employees
4) Meet customers and vendors. Learn business meeting skills
5) Understand polyurethane industry, foam industry and mobile electronics industry

4.Indicate the reasons why other individuals have succeeded or failed in this or similar positions.
Former researcher left this position to have marketing experience. He wanted more contact with customers, which organization did not provide effectively.

None planned yet

6.How much time each week will you average with the person.
He will be working in the same office with me. We will have regular weekly meeting and discuss issues and development projects daily.

Decide if given product is good to be sold to a customer
Decide if given manufacturing condition is enough to make good product
Decide if given formulation is good enough to make fine product
Decide what is the root cause for a given customer complaints or manufacturing problems

2 researchers are leaving R&D organization from 4 researchers including team leader.
New researcher need to quickly adapt to organization and pick up knowledge.
